Inventory of the Peer Worker Role

This two-day interactive virtual training from the Leadership Training Institute training helps learners build the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to use their lived experience to improve health outcomes. This course will provide strategies to assist peer workers in taking the online exam, having a successful practicum experience, and position peer workers to become NYS Certified Peer Workers.

The goal of this training is to build upon the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of current and prospective peer workers to the NYS Peer Worker Certification Program and continue the development of a skilled, knowledgeable, and effective peer workforce in New York State, to assist in meeting NYS ETE objectives.

Training objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the importance of the shared lived experience within peer work and its significant role in improving health outcomes.

2. Work effectively as a member of their agency’s care team.

3. Follow best practices for documenting the services they provide to clients.

4. Understand what Continuing Education Units are and how they apply to Certification.

5. Maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries when working with clients.

6. Explore issues related to employment as a peer worker.

7. Identify self-care strategies to address work-related stress.

8. Recognize the value of ongoing supervisory feedback.

9. Identify opportunities for growth and professional development after certification.

Prerequisites:

Individuals who have completed the one-day Introduction to the Peer Work Role course must have an active application with the NYS Peer Worker Certification Program, and ideally have completed 40 hours of Core and/or Specialized training hours from the NYS Certified Peer Worker Course Tracker Form.

Intended audience:

The course is intended for those participants with active applications in the NYS Peer Worker Certification Program. Ideally, the participant has work or volunteer experience and a level of comfort strategically sharing their lived experience as a peer worker.

This course is mandatory for all peers working on their NYS Certified Peer Worker (CPW) certificate.
