Introduction to the Peer Worker Role

This two-day, 5 hour interactive webinar from the Leadership Training Institute helps learners build and solidify their knowledge of the peer worker role and provides insight into the real-life experience of peer workers. The goal of this training is to introduce current and prospective peer workers to the NYS Peer Worker Certification Program and begin the development of a skilled, knowledgeable, and effective peer workforce in New York State, to assist in meeting NYS ETE objectives.

This course also highlights who this program is for and helps learners judge if this is right for them. Upon completion of this training, learners should be able to assess their readiness to commit their time and energy to the New York State Peer Worker Certification process.

Training objectives:

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the importance of the shared lived experience within Peer Work and its significant role in improving health outcomes

2. List core competencies of NYS Certified Peer Workers

3. Identify how coursework and practicum experience assist peers in meeting the core competencies

4. Explore issues related to employment as a peer worker

5. Recall the NYS Certified Peer Worker Code of Ethics

6. Recognize the necessity of the supervisor-peer relationship and evaluation process

7. Evaluate readiness for program participation

Intended audience:

Current and prospective peer workers who apply to the New York State Peer Worker Certification Program.

Prerequisite:

Participants should be individuals identified by an organization to participate in a practicum with the potential for future employment. As such, participants may be in the process of determining whether being a Peer Worker is truly in line with their desires and best interests.
